Let’s talk about truth

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is taunting the Senate over the Democratic Party’s impeachment documents, saying senators, implying all Republicans, are “afraid of the truth. She said, “This is just another avoiding of the facts and the truth on their part. They don’t want to see documents, they don’t want to hear from eye witnesses, they want to ignore anything new that comes up.” Apparently, Pelosi doesn’t remember that her party edited the transcripts and documents, heard testimonies from mostly third and fourth parties, and ignored new information brought forward that proved their impeachment case unworthy. So this goes around full circle. But let’s talk about truth.

Christ said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me.” Christ is the truth. In John 8:31-32, Christ said, “If you continue in my word, you are truly My disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 1:17 says, “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” The prophet Zechariah, speaking of the Lord’s instruction for His people, said, “These are the things that you shall do; Speak each man the truth to his neighbor; Give judgment in your gates for truth, justice, and peace; Let none of you think evil in your heart against your neighbor; And do not love a false oath. For all these are things that I hate,’ Says the LORD.”

Let us recall the exchange Christ had with Pharisees in John 8:42-47: “If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and came from God; nor have I come of Myself, but He sent Me. Why do you not understand My speech? Because you are not able to listen to My word. You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it. But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me. Which of you convicts Me of sin? And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me? He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”

We see that there is tremendous distinction between the character traits of truth and lies. Pelosi now wants to make the impeachment all about truth, when the truth in the indictment she sent to the Senate is highly questionable. He who is of God hears God’s words. We know them by their fruits—what they say and do. As is written in Romans 1:24-25, “Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator…” When we talk about truth and current events like impeachment, do we hear truth in the witness of lies?
